To hide Google AI Overviews in desktop Chrome, install AiHide from its official Chrome Web Store listing, open its popup and set AI Overview to Hide. You can choose Minimize instead if you want a Show/Hide control, and configure question sections independently.
Start with the right browser and listing
Use the desktop Chrome window where you normally search. An extension installed in another browser or a different browser profile will not change the results in the window you are using. Check the profile before troubleshooting a setup that appears to have no effect.
Open the official AiHide listing using this site's Chrome install button. Read the extension details and the permissions Chrome presents. Select Add to Chrome, then confirm the installation if you accept those permissions. Chrome's official installation guidance recommends approving only extensions you trust.
This walkthrough is for a computer. The Chrome Web Store's mobile Add to Desktop action does not make a desktop extension run on your phone. If your search problem is on a mobile device, read our mobile compatibility guide before attempting a desktop setup.
Find and open the AiHide controls
After installation, use Chrome's extensions menu near the address bar to find AiHide. You can pin its icon to the toolbar for convenient access, but pinning is only a shortcut to the popup. It is separate from choosing what the extension should hide.
- Open the AiHide popup.
- Select the AI Overview tab.
- Choose Hide to remove the targeted overview from view.
- Open or return to a Google Search results page.
- Refresh that tab if it was already open before installation or the setting change.
Look at the category you selected when checking the result. An expandable question list is not the same thing as the overview. Seeing one category remain visible does not, by itself, mean that the other category's control has failed.
Choose whether to keep occasional access
If you sometimes want to inspect an overview, select Minimize rather than Hide. This mode keeps the section accessible through AiHide's Show/Hide control. It suits searches where you want less clutter initially but prefer to decide whether to reveal the content.
Choose Off to leave that category unchanged by AiHide. These choices let you try different arrangements without committing to a permanent removal. Read the three-mode comparison if you are unsure which behavior you want.
Configure question boxes separately
Open the AI Questions tab to adjust question sections such as People also ask. You can hide those while minimizing overviews, or leave them alone while hiding overviews. There is no need to give both categories the same setting.
The product's AI Questions label is a control category. It should not be read as a claim that every answer in Google's question boxes is generated by AI. Our People also ask guide explains what that control is for.
If the overview is still visible
First check that AiHide is enabled in Chrome and that the AI Overview mode is not Off. Then check whether Chrome allows it to run on the Google site you are visiting. A browser restriction that withholds page access can prevent a page-customizing extension from doing its job.
Also check whether you are in an Incognito window or a managed work browser, where separate restrictions may apply. Follow our troubleshooting steps for those cases. AiHide targets supported results-page sections; it does not switch off all Google AI or change the native Google app on another device.
