How to Turn Off Google AI Overviews: What You Can Actually Control

Understand your options for hiding Google AI Overviews, from the Web filter to separate Hide and Minimize controls in AiHide.

Our browser extension lets you hide or minimize Google AI Overviews and related question sections.

AiHide browser extension

You can hide Google AI Overviews in your desktop browser with AiHide, or use Google's Web filter for a view focused on website links. Neither approach is an account-wide switch that disables every Google AI feature. Start by deciding whether you want a different results view or simply want the overview out of your way.

Choose the change you actually want

“Turn off Google AI” can describe several different frustrations. An answer at the top of a results page, expandable question boxes and a conversational search screen are different interfaces. Identify the part that interrupts your search before changing settings. Otherwise, you may adjust a control that has no effect on the thing you are seeing.

If the overview itself is the problem, AiHide gives you a direct choice: hide that section, minimize it so you can reveal it when useful, or leave it alone. If you want a link-focused result view instead, try the Web filter. Our Web filter and extension comparison explains that choice in more detail.

Is there a Google setting to disable AI Overviews?

Google's official guidance describes AI Overviews as a core Search feature without a general off switch. Avoid instructions that promise a single preference will permanently remove all Google AI. In particular, leaving a Search Labs experiment should not be treated as disabling every released Search feature.

This distinction matters when following an older tutorial. A screenshot may refer to an experiment, an account setting or a browser interface that differs from yours. Check what a setting controls before assuming that an absent switch means you have done something wrong.

Hide the overview with AiHide

AiHide changes how targeted sections appear in supported desktop Google results pages. It gives the AI Overview and AI Questions categories their own controls. You can remove the overview from view while making a separate decision about question sections such as People also ask.

  1. Install AiHide from the official listing for your desktop browser.
  2. Open the extension popup from the browser toolbar or extensions menu.
  3. Select AI Overview and choose Hide.
  4. Return to Google Search. Refresh an already-open results tab if necessary.
  5. Adjust AI Questions separately if you also want to change question sections.

For a more detailed first-run walkthrough, see setting up AiHide in Chrome. You do not need to configure a Gemini model or change your Google account to choose an AiHide display mode.

Keep the option to read an overview

Hiding everything is not the only useful setup. Choose Minimize when you generally prefer less clutter but occasionally want to inspect the overview. AiHide provides a Show/Hide control so that access remains available without keeping the full section open.

For example, you might hide question sections while minimizing overviews. Or you might hide overviews and leave questions untouched. Choose the combination that suits how you search; the two categories do not need to use the same mode. Our guide to Hide, Minimize and Off covers the differences.

Understand the limits before you change anything

Hiding a page section changes what you see in that browser. It does not configure Google's models, change an account-wide preference, or disable AI experiences in other apps. A conversational AI Mode screen also falls outside a promise to hide an overview in ordinary results.

Google can change its page layouts, which may require extension updates. If the expected section remains visible, check the selected mode and browser access before changing unrelated settings. When you want a category back, choose Off and reload the results tab. Reloading restores a section that Hide has already removed from the current page.
