What you are saving
A WhatsApp Web export is a separate copy of a conversation in a format you can open outside WhatsApp. Depending on the format, that might be a readable HTML page, a plain-text document, or spreadsheet rows. Available attachments can travel with the conversation in a ZIP file.
Choose this approach when your goal is reading, searching, organizing, or keeping a record on your computer. If you want to restore an account on another phone, use WhatsApp's own backup or transfer workflow. A downloaded conversation archive serves a different purpose.
Prepare the conversation before exporting
Open WhatsApp Web in your browser and sign in to your own account. Find the contact or group you want to save. Check a recent message and an older message that should be in the archive, then open an important attachment to see whether it is available.
Keep the tab open. If the conversation is still loading, allow it to finish before starting. For an important record, note the oldest date you can actually see: a successful download alone does not prove that every historical message was accessible.
Download a chat archive with ChatVault
- Install ChatVault from its official Chrome Web Store listing and open WhatsApp Web.
- Open the ChatVault popup from the browser toolbar.
- Select the contact or group conversation you want to save.
- Choose an export format. HTML is a useful first choice if you plan to read the conversation later.
- Start the backup and keep the popup open while messages and available media are collected.
- Wait for the completed ZIP download before closing the popup or WhatsApp Web.
The result is saved to your computer. The chat content is processed in the browser as part of the export workflow; you do not need to upload your conversation to this website.
Check the downloaded ZIP
Extract the archive into a new folder rather than opening only the main document inside the ZIP preview. Open the exported chat and check the contact name, a few senders, the first and last dates, and one distinctive message you can compare with WhatsApp Web.
If attachments were included, keep the media/ folder beside the chat file. Check a photo and a document, not just the message count. Review report.txt if the archive contains one; it can identify media that could not be downloaded.
Give your archives useful names
Use a folder name you will recognize later, such as family-chat-2026-10-13 or project-orion-october-2026. Keep the original ZIP as your untouched copy and use the extracted folder for reading.
For conversations that matter to you, keep another copy on a storage device or service you trust. Choose where to store it deliberately: a chat archive may contain names, phone numbers, photos, and information about other people.
Frequently asked questions
Can I read the archive without opening WhatsApp?
Yes. A text, spreadsheet, or HTML export can be opened with the appropriate application. For an HTML archive with attachments, extract the ZIP and keep its folder structure together.
Does a chat archive restore messages into WhatsApp?
No. A readable conversation export is not a WhatsApp account-restore backup. Use the official backup or transfer process when changing phones.
