First, extract the complete ZIP
If you are reading an HTML export inside a ZIP preview, extract the archive into a folder and open the HTML file from there. Check that the media/ folder is present beside the main document.
If the media file exists but the chat cannot open it, the problem may be a moved folder or renamed file. Restore the original generated structure before retrying the download. Sending only the chat document can produce the same symptom for a recipient.
Check the same attachment in WhatsApp Web
Find the original message and open its attachment directly in WhatsApp Web. Test the full image or audio file rather than relying on a visible thumbnail. If WhatsApp cannot load it, the export may not have had access to downloadable content.
A file can become unavailable independently of the surrounding message. If opening it still fails, ask the sender for another copy when appropriate. An exporter cannot guarantee recovery of a file that the browser session cannot retrieve.
Read the export report
If ChatVault included report.txt, open it and note which media items failed. Compare those entries with the messages in the conversation. This gives you a focused list to investigate instead of checking every attachment at random.
Keep the report with the archive. It documents the result of that export and helps future readers understand missing items. Do not remove the report just because the main document opens correctly.
Retry after checking the browser session
- Keep your existing ZIP until the new copy is verified.
- Refresh WhatsApp Web if the conversation or files are not loading normally.
- Open the relevant attachments and allow them to load.
- Open ChatVault, reselect the correct chat, and run the export again.
- Keep the popup open and avoid closing the WhatsApp tab during collection.
- Extract the replacement archive and check the specific files that were missing.
If you are working with a very large conversation, a focused date-based archive can make it easier to check the relevant period and attachments.
Send a useful support report without private content
If the problem persists, describe your browser, extension version, export format, and the stage where it failed. Say whether WhatsApp Web itself could open the attachment and whether the exported media folder contains a file for it.
You can use the ChatVault contact page. Do not include private messages, photos, license keys, or payment details in a troubleshooting report. A description of the behavior is a better starting point than sending an entire personal archive.
Frequently asked questions
Does every missing attachment mean the exporter failed?
No. The attachment may be unavailable in WhatsApp Web, or it may exist in the ZIP but no longer be at the path expected by the chat document. Check availability and folder structure first.
Should I delete the first archive after retrying?
Keep it until you have extracted and checked the replacement. Compare the specific missing items rather than relying on the new ZIP filename.
